Day Four:
We hope everyone had a wonderful week. As counselors we sure did.
Today was very exhausting as the action never stopped. We discussed and applied Bernoulli's principle, learned about the polarity of water, demonstrated how air pressure is all around us, created soapy snake makers, raced with puzzles, burned some hexane, made homemade refrigerator magnets, and competed in the ultimate STEM challenge of designing a carnival ride!
See over 160 pics below showing it all!
The campers were all wonderful. Most of all they made some new friends, learned the importance of team work, and discovered the value of exploration!
Hope to see you all next summer!

Day 3 Science Camp:
Well me made it through day three with flying colors.
Tie-dye shirts came out great (we were able to dodge around the raindrops to get them dry). An early morning lesson plan on what light is by Mr. Mo was followed by prism light splitting outside and the creation of color spinning wheels. These gadgets did the opposite of the prisms…when spun really fast they mixed all the colors of the rainbow into the color of white…pretty cool. In the same vein we then took various colors of skittles and allowed them to dissolve in water and slowly let their colors mix. You will see a bunch of very awesome pictures of these in our day three gallery below.
To round out the afternoon, after lunch and segment three of Moana we finally tackled the “dancing man” challenge and the 5-penny parachute drop contest. The counselors and I were all very impressed with the creative designs and high level of teamwork on these projects.
All in all it was an extremely motion-filled day with not stop action and discovery. There should be some tired campers tonight!
See you all tomorrow for day four. It is our last day and we will hit the ground running with a ton of projects, labs, and experiments to complete.
If you get time tonight check out the free app that Sophia recommended to everyone today called “little alchemy”. A pretty cool way to mix virtual substances to explore what products are produced.
Also…happy birthday to Elizabeth Barata today, who turned 7.
See you in the morning.

Day 2:
As you can see from well over 200 pictures below, we had an incredibly active day today. Instead of a long winded recap of the day please view the pics as they will take you through a timeline of many of the things we worked on during day two.
We finish up the tie-dye shirts tomorrow and continue with our Boinks spring experiment early in the morning!
Get a good rest again tonight....you will need to be on your A game tomorrow!

Panther Science Camp Day One:
We have a great group of campers this week. Everyone is living faithfully up to the Golden Rule.
It was an active day. (See over 150 pictures below outlining our day). Once we got underway with a few camp rules and safety instructions we did a couple of live demonstrations. (Of course every student was reminded never to try any demo or experiment alone at home without adult supervision and permission). After that, we came up with team names and designed team posters. Students were given prizes based on the poster category that their team won.
Once the posters were complete, we needed a quick snack break and then jumped right into the team design challenge which was to make a catapult penny launcher. This is a fantastic STEM project because it allows students to work through a process of trial and error in constructing a device that will launch a penny as far as possible. It was great to see every team working out the kinks and flaws, sharing ideas, and not being afraid to make mistakes.
You can see some of the pictures which walk you through some of their plans and designs. They also show the contests that we had outside to test the final models.
After the catapult contest we were starving and took lunch. The campers had several selections of films to watch as part of our post-lunch tradition. This allows for some time to relax a bit after eating to give our food time to digest. The kids voted to watch Moana this week and we were lucky enough to be able to use the giant performing arts center to do this for twenty minutes. We will see 20-25 minutes of the film each day which will allow us to complete it by Thursday!
After the movie we warmed back up with a word search race and then proceeded onto the next challenge. This challenge was to cut a hole in a 3 x 5 index card large enough to step through. It sounds a lot easier to do than it really is. Kudos to Lucas for figuring it out first! Any camper who was not able to do it was encouraged to practice with it tonight (check Youtube if you want) and come in tomorrow to show us what they learned.
The day ended with a short lecture on centripetal force, the proposed space elevator project and a couple of related demonstrations by Mr. Mo. Campers then were allowed to design their own projects that displayed the use of this force. Even though we ran out of time, several kids were able to pull it off. We will give more time for everyone to be able to finish this first thing tomorrow.
Get a great sleep tonight....we will be very busy tomorrow with the tie-dye creations, color wheels, penny parachute contests, dancing man cups, and much much more.
See you at 9:30 in room 214.
Thanks for a great day one!
